Rachel Cotterman (CFS ’06) is a junior at Oberlin College, where she is a Comparative American Studies major with a concentration in Art and Social Change. She stays happy and healthy by cooking for her co-op, playing in the dirt, and starting as many spontaneous dance parties as possible. She has learned to love northeast Ohio, and is excited to embark on a spring semester abroad in Vietnam. But she is also so grateful to still have such a supportive community at home in NC!

Lindsay Cooper (CFS ’00) is a musician living in both Durham and the San Francisco bay area. She graduated from Mills College in 2004, majoring in InterMedia Arts. Her lighting design and fabrication work can be found at www.Wirerunner.com. She is a founding member of the music collective TripKnight, and she performs with them throughout the United States. You can visit the website at www.TripKnight.com.

Abbie Gabrielson (CFS ’06) is a junior at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. She is majoring in piano performance and French. She hasn’t danced since she was at Friends School, but she has really enjoyed delving back into it during this winter break. She is really excited to go back to Portland soon because she will be living with her friends in a real grown-up house for the first time. She is currently learning how to cook good meals so that she can happily feed her friends in her new house. As you watch this show, Abbie hopes that you let your mind wander around with the movement and the sounds because they might have something to tell you….?

Sara Gabrielson (CFS ’08) is glad to be back in the center building dancing with friend schoolers! She has just finished her first semester at Vassar College where she is exploring many different subjects and dancing dancing dancing. She is a part of the Vassar Repertory Dance Theater and has been enjoying working with student choreographers as well as the amazing dance faculty. Lately she has been especially inspired by poetry, religion, and biology. When she is not running from class to class or dancing, she is spending time with her wonderful friends, playing Frisbee, and discovering the beautiful Vassar campus. She says thanks to everyone!!!! Especially her supportive family.

Jessica Harris (CFS ’00) has danced professionally with Shen Wei Dance Arts since 2001. She is currently completing her degree from the New School in New York.

She spent her semester taking as many dance classes as she can cram into her schedule, as well as choreographing and dancing in the tri-college Latin Dance group, Pulso Latino, running a capoeira club, trying to learn as many languages as possible, and going into the city with friends. She is excited to be dancing at CFS again, and would to thank Annie immensely for the tremendous inspiration to dance! She would also like to thank her wonderful family, her friends, and Forca Unificada.

Alison Kibbe (CFS '08) has been missing CFS dance since she took her bow at the 2007 Winter Dance Concert. She is a freshman at Duke University, and tries to bring a little bit of CFS to the Gothic Wonderland everyday. She spent her first semester studying everything from Plato to engineering to African dance, during which she discovered that people, stories and art are the most interesting, and is most likely leaning towards public policy, cultural anthropology and women's studies. She cannot express what CFS, especially the dance community, has given her over the years and is so excited to be back home dancing again!

CFS ALUMNI DANCE IMPROV took place on Saturday January 3rd, 2009.

A dozen CFS alumni dancers rehearsed for more than a week for four to six hours a day. They were directed by Jessica Harris ('00) who has danced all over the globe with Shen Wei Dance Arts (including the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games). Jessica brought fellow New York and international dancer and choreographer Dai Jian to work with the CFS Alumni.

The show raised money for the Kiai Parker Fund. This fund is named in memory of dancer and CFS alumna Kiai Parker and provides scholarships for dancers to attend ADF and other dance opportunities.

A full house at the CFS Center watched the fruits of their efforts: a series of dance and music improvisations that were by turns funny, moving, challenging, and serious.

Felicitas Seebass ('89) "found."
We recently received this message from Felicitas:

Dear CFSers,
It was recently brought to my attention that according to the CFS Alum News I was 'lost' and 'living somewhere in Europe'. Let me update that:
I've been back in Basel, Switzerland since 1993, incidentally the city where I was born and my family is from. My week is split: one half I'm at the goldsmith studio/shop that I share with a friend. The other half I teach English, grades 7-9, at a small private school, not unlike CFS. (What are the statistics for people going into teaching and art after CFS?!)
My brother Valentin also moved to Basel after a some years in Innsbruck, Austria and Sydney, Australia, where he got his BA in Audio Engineering.
I check in on the CFS website occassionally, when the bug bites. It was great to have CFS Alum Amanda Rouse visit for the first time in 18 years!

Mig Little Hayes, MS/US Librarian and MS teacher, has just learned that her proposed project, Watts-Busters: An Environmental Media Project for Kids has been selected as a 2007 winner by the Bright Ideas program sponsored by Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation.

The documentary film will be shown at the Friends Environmental Education Network conference in April.

Additionally, NC Beautiful, a provider of environmental education opportunities in North Carolina, has awarded Mig a 2007 Windows of Opportunity grant to support the same project.

Thanks to everyone who helped in the process or has offered support!!"

I just co-led an 11-day delegation of Interfaith Peace-Builders and the American Friends Service Committee to Israel and the occupied West Bank.

The Bright Ideas program strives to enhance innovative classroom projects that would not otherwise be funded. This means that Middle School students will write and produce an environmental action movie, after researching current data on global warming, interviewing students throughout CFS about their energy knowledge, and documenting ways in which our classes and individual students are making and can make a difference.

The documentary film will be shown at the Friends Environmental Education Network conference in April.

Additionally, NC Beautiful, a provider of environmental education opportunities in North Carolina, has awarded Mig a 2007 Windows of Opportunity grant to support the same project.

For more information on the Bright Ideas program or the Windows of Opportunity Grants follow these links: http://www.pemc.org/brightideas.php or www.ncbeautiful.org
