Welcome to the Upper School!

The words greet you as you cross the creek and approach the Carolina Friends Upper School, and, I hope that as you examine our program’s website, you begin to get a sense of everything that salutation means to us here.
At CFS, the insights and attitudes of Friends define who we are and what we do. We believe that young people learn best in an environment that offers intellectual and social support to each person while asking students to take responsibility for not only their own learning, but also the growth and functioning of the whole community.
You’ll find that we often quote the last phrase of our mission statement: “We teach our children that it is possible to change the world.” In the Upper School, you will find staff who are accomplished in their disciplines, deeply caring of students, and committed to providing students examples of lives engaged in pursuing truth, peace, and social justice.
We do not believe that education is merely a preparation for life, for “the real world.” We believe that students have things to say, and real lives to lead, right now. It’s our mission to help them find their voice, and to find their way.
We hope that when our students leave us, they have the vision, tools, and experience to pursue the change they wish to see in the world.
